Next year European citizens will be called to elect their representatives at the European Parliament.

This is a key moment for the Union as it enables citizens to shape, in the most direct way, the Union’s future for the next 5 years.

As the European Union’s strength lies in its democratic values, all EU institutions share the aim of ensuring free, fair and transparent elections and of promoting the highest participation among citizens as candidates and voters.

To best prepare for the elections, as announced in the European Democracy Action Plan of December 2020, the European Commission will “organise a high-level event bringing together various authorities to address the challenges related to electoral processes as well as empowering citizens to participate as voters and candidates in the democratic process”.

The High-Level event on elections will take place on 23 and 24 October 2023.

It will allow discussions and exchanges of best practices to support turnout, empower citizens to take part in the elections in an inclusive manner, as well as other measures ensuring the resilience of the electoral systems and the fairness and transparency of the elections across the Union.
